How come practically EVERY mutant dies in xmen the comic books?

I haven't read them but i've read the wikipedia articles for most of my favorite characters. Jean Grey dies... Cyclops dies... Kitty gets stuck in a bullet? WTF? Oh but then they come back to life like 6 times lmfao... why do most of the mutants die?
