Salt water fish cannot be put in freshwater! Osmosis is when water moves from an area of high concentration to low concentration until equilibrium is reached. Without salt water (which decreases the water concentration) a lot more water would diffuse into the fish to reach equilibrium. The excess water would cause their cells to become turgid and thus explode, killing the fish.
